Artist: Special Explosion
Song: Fire
Album: To Infinity
Seattle continues to churn out talented new indie rock bands. One of those bands you may not have heard of yet is Special Explosion. They’ve been playing since 2010, and their sound can be compared to the somber, intricate sounds that fellow Northwest natives Death Cab for Cutie make, but with an extra harmonic sweetness to them that grants them a unique voice.
“Fire”, from 2017’s To Infinity [Topshelf Records] is an enticing entry to the band’s music. Built on a melancholic piano foundation, a steady, rhythmic vocal chant slowly floods in and rises into a hypnotic hook. In only two stanzas of lyrics, we manage to feel the loneliness and longing in the narrator’s desires. It’s a powerful piece, and just one taste from an equally moving and beautiful album.
The group is playing the Echoplex in Los Angeles on February 20th. More tour dates can be found here.
