There is always a place for good soul music, and Durand Jones & The Indications write soul that hearkens back to the classics while never sounding dated. Formed in 2012 while the band members were in college, they recorded their debut album on a shoestring budget, but proved you don’t need a lot of money to make great music.
First single “Smile” runs on Jones’ smooth vocals, and is elevated by grooving horns and crisp drums. The heavy lyrics pack a punch, but the song’s melody lets the melancholy flow but never overwhelm.
