Even more universal than TikTok, a great television show has the ability to reach and influence audiences across age, gender and race spectrums. That’s why having a great sync placement can send a song soaring to new stratospheres.
A recent show with a slurry of great tracks in the soundtrack is Netflix’s BEEF, starring Ali Wong and Steve Yeun. The story of a road rage incident’s escalation to life-ruining heights is peppered with late-90’s and early 2000’s alternative and rock tracks, to often powerful effect. One sync that really struck me was the use of Icelandic imp Björk‘s 1997 track “All is Full of Love”.
Used with a healthy dose of irony considering the furious animosity between the show’s two main characters, the dreamy track’s elegiac synths soaring with the camera over a lovely aerial of a road felt downright enlightening in the context of the show. While many of Björk‘s songs have always been a little too out-there for my tastes, the pairing with BEEF has certainly given me a newfound love for this song. Perhaps it will do the same for the many other viewers of this excellent show.
