World Watch: Koala Voice

Country: Slovenia

Since forming in 2010, Koala Voice have become one of the biggest indie rock bands in their native Slovenia. The four-piece have played some of the biggest venues in their country, as well as graced the stages of numerous European festivals, toured around the continent, and even opened for Pixies.

Listening to their music, it quickly becomes clear this is a band that know how to write accessible tracks that emotionally resonate. Their latest single “The Bigger the City” has a classic rock aura while still remaining musically humble, which fits the song perfectly. “The bigger the city, the smaller I get. People remember, and people forget” sings vocalist Manca Trampuš, and while the song is about loneliness, the sonics mirror the feeling, building something grandiose that winds tightly inward to make it feel personal.

“Ker Tu Je Vse Tako Lepo” is an attitude-driven synth rock tune that could burn down a discotheque, while “Vukovi” is a breezy indie pop tune made slightly eerie through backing howls. Th excellently named “Spaghettification” has the kind of epic guitar interplay and rollicking rhythm that anthems are made of, while “Go Disco Go” brings to mind some of Pixies‘ funkier, bass-driven tracks.
