New Music Friday: July 21, 2023

The world is scorching out there, so unless you’re living near a pool or beach, I hope you’re staying cool indoors! There’s some great new music out this week that you can blast through your headphones or speakers depending on where you’re at.

Britpop legends Blur are back with their first new album in years and it’s a true return-to-form. Hard rock ingenues Greta Van Fleet have their third full-length out. There’s a wonderful album by The Penske File that will appeal to fans of The Menzingers or The Gaslight Anthem (both of whom appear later in this post), and blasting out of retirement with a new EP are the early 00’s pop-punk favorites Yellowcard! We also have the latest EP from indie darling SEB and roots rockers The Americans (look back at our very first interview with the group’s frontman Patrick Ferris).

Earlier this week I finally got to see Better Than Ezra in concert, and it was fittingly on the release day of their first new song in five years! Epic rock instrumentalists Explosions in the Sky have a breathtaking new one, and The Gaslight Anthem announced their new album’s title and release date and dropped the massive title track featuring one Mr. Bruce Springsteen.

Taking Meds announced their new album this week and dropped a new song from it. And like Yellowcard, another group of pop-punk elder statesmen are back with a new song – MxPx! The always reliable Mountain Goats announced their new album with a new track, and Canada’s best folk troubadour Dan Mangan has a great new track. The Menzingers always deliver with their catchy brand of punk, so can’t deny their new banger a spot on the list, and Cigarettes After Sex show why they remain undeniable with a new song.

We’re also bringing back Slowdive, MJ Lenderman, Sea Lemon, Hurry, Felicity (with Calling All Captains), Magnolia Park (with nothing. nowhere), illuminati hotties, Citizen, OK Go, Alice Cooper, As Friends Rust, Malena Smith, Jack, The Antlers, Bryce Vine, Meet Me @ The Altar, Bloc Party, Barenaked Ladies, Allah-Las, Guided by Voices, Chris Stapleton, Albert Kass, Haim, Beabadoobee, Noah Gunderson, The Maine, Hozier, Citizen Cope, Sam Barber, Lupe Fiasco and Tame Impala. Damn that’s a lot of big names!

The acts we’re including for the first time this week are The Armed, Celia, Letter Kills, Moon Walker, PAERISH, Madds Buckley, New Friends and The Beaches.

Follow our New Music Friday Playlist and start listening to all of these songs and more!
