Young Australian country star Angus Gill has already proved himself a star in his native land, winning a Golden Guitar award, having a number of ARIA charting singles, and even becoming the youngest Australian male artist to headline Nashville’s The Grand Ole Opry. Yet, not letting himself be pigeon-holed, the artist has ventured into new musical territory with his latest single “Crying Out for Love”.
Written as part of a songwriting challenge, Gill says of the new track:
“I let it percolate for a few days, then I thought of the hook ‘waiting, wishing, crying out for love.’ I wanted a few songs with interesting feels, so I started writing this lyric to a drum groove that reminded me of Paul Simon’s Rhythm of the Saints record. It’s unlike anything I’ve done before. It’s very much fusing what I do, my storytelling, wit and lyricism with world music – an infectious Latin pulse.”
Listening to the track, you can only barely hear the country foundation. The percussion carries a latin flavor, while the backing accordion brings a warm Caribbean breeze to the song. Gill’s delivery certainly conjures Paul Simon‘s versatile storytelling, with backing vocalists conjuring early 60’s pop. It’s a hip-shaking, buoyant number that would go over well with fans of classic rock and Jimmy Buffet.
