New Music Friday: September 15, 2023

For those who celebrate, Shana Tova. Along with celebrating the Jewish new year, there’s also plenty of great new music to celebrate the release of this week. First off, Niger’s brilliant singer-songwriter-guitarist Bombino has his latest album out as he continues his tour of the U.S.. Beloved Canadians Barenaked Ladies have their latest collection of pop rock, while Trevor Hall‘s smooth blend of reggae-influenced acoustic rock should mellow out your day. Beloved indie artist Mitski walked back her retirement plans and has a brand new album out, and instrumental post-rock greats Explosions in the Sky continue their epic musical journey with their new one. The Beaches continue their ascent to stardom with their new album, and finally, we have the latest from garage indie-pop band Small Crush (read our review of it here).

“I Melt With You” is one of the best songs of the 80s, and now the band behind that hit, Modern English, have returned with a brand new single. Cold War Kids have the third single from their new album out, while indie folk group Big Thief has the second. The incredible Dessa has dropped the third track from her new collection, and Semisonic continue to crush it with their latest songs. The Iron Roses and Superchunk always are reliable for spiky punk songs, while Sufjan Stevens and Wilco can chill you out with their folky numbers. All Time Low and Avril Lavigne have dropped a big collab,
