A new San Francisco punk group has stumbled across The Indy Review’s desk and now we can’t get their debut single out of our heads. Tess & The Details, the four piece led by vocalist and guitarist Tess Stevens, dropped “Canary” on 8/31 marking the band’s first song and music video to support their upcoming debut album Runaway (to be released this winter via Double Helix Records).
“Canary” is everything you want from a modern punk song. With an immediate guitar and drum stutter ahead of Stevens’ powerful yet hypnotizing vocals, “Canary” is hard to turn off from the start. Guitar tones are reminiscent of legends such as Alkaline Trio as it pulls you into its fast-paced chorus. With my first few listens, I was largely impressed by drummer Gideon Berger and his tight fills peppered throughout the track. It all comes together to give you a Bad Religion feel with an updated, infectious energy.
I’m looking forward for more from this SF punk band. Make sure to follow them on Instagram for upcoming single and album announcements.
And check out “Canary” in our Check This 2023 Playlist!
