Ever since meeting at a college party, the duo of Andrea de Varona (she/her) and Josh Ford (he/him) have been inseparable, and have led their mutual desire to create music that understands you to be the foundation of Fake Dad. Melding a number of musical styles, their songs explore identity and relationships in nuanced ways, and on their latest single “So Dramatic!”, in multiple languages.
The bilingual track includes lyrics in English and Spanish, and according to de Varona, “Having bilingual lyrics that are never fully in Spanish was very intentional because we’re trying to capture the identity and existing duality of being a Hispanic person in America who may have grown up speaking primarily one language at home but largely another in the outside world.”
With a synth-driven, strutting beat, sharply-delivered vocals and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, “So Dramatic!” has the potential to soundtrack nights at an underground bar as much as it could play behind mega-commercials.
