The power in Folk-Americana artist Lindsey Hinkle‘s voice is raw and more authentic than many artists with twice her years playing. Drawing from real experiences getting sober and dealing with a broken heart, her first single “Shades of Gray” is a devastating lament stripped to the bare bones of emotional vulnerability.
About the single, Hinkle says:
“I wrote ‘Shades of Gray’ on my way back from Nashville when I was almost run over by an 18-wheeler coming down Interstate 24. Funny how you see something coming a mile away, knowing damn well you should move on, but you stay there anyway…and don’t switch lanes. Oh, the irony.”
Ever acoustic string picked hits with a heavy melancholy, as Hinkle recalls her near run-in with death. Her vocals are haunting and soulful throughout, delivery self-destructive lines like “I stood over a cliff, with my arms spread open wide. Ready to let go and fall to the bottom willingly by your side” that perfectly echo the pain we cause ourselves when we stay with the wrong person too long.
It’s a beautiful track, which you should check out in our Check This 2023 Playlist!
