No matter how closely you follow the latest artists and music coming out, it’s still easy to miss an artist breaking just out of earshot. Take singer-songwriter John Vincent III for example. The Houston, TX-born artist had his debut album come out in 2019, and nearly gave up on a career in music as the pandemic hit. Yet, while traveling with his partner around the country for a year in a van, he kept writing songs, and tracks from his debut album racked up enough streams to earn him a gold single (“Next to You”) and get him signed with Concord Records for his latest release. And I’ve just learned about him in the last month.
“It’s difficult to put into words what Songs for the Canyon is, as it’s simply who I was for close to three years,” Vincent has reflected. While following the ups and downs of those years, latest single “Bluebird Singing” certainly feels written from the sunnier side of those times. The journey begins with warm acoustic guitars, as Vincent recounts “Drove my car from Houston to Californ-i-a, took a hit in Tucson, woke up in LA…just lean into that sunshine”. You can’t help but feel an orange glow casting down on your face while listening to this peaceful road song.
