World Watch: Wet Cactus

Country: Spain

Formed in Cantabria in the summer of 2013, Wet Cactus released their debut EP in 2015, deeply rooted in the sound of stoner/desert rock, while also incorporating psychedelia and other heavier styles into their sound. On songs like their single “Damned Rope”, guitars drudge through the mud and slip and slide with solos over earthquaking drums for a sound that feels like moshing through a sandstorm.

Like any good band of their nature, they write songs to jam to. These aren’t built for quick TikTok clips. Tracks like “Jim’s Song” are spacey journeys through the astral plane, baking you in a red sun’s heat with the only respite being a cold beer you tip to your lips every few minutes, until you’re suddenly caught in a torrential downpour of riffs and exuberant sonic decimation. Newer songs like “Million Tears” showcase a more intimate, delicate side to the group, with a mournful bass line underscoring dramatic high notes. As these parts weave themselves together, bluesy vocals ala Robert Plant enter the picture, wailing in a mighty fashion.

It’s simply powerful rock n’ roll, and the kind of music you must hear if you’re a fan of anyone from Led Zeppelin to Queens of the Stone Age. Check out two of their tracks in our World Watch Playlist!
