Some bands can take years to find their groove. North Carolina’s Caged Affair apparently want to put all of those bands to shame. Formed in mid-2023, the group have already released a bunch of singles and the Grass Fed EP, and have honed in on a smashing, heavy alternative rock/indie punk sound back by savvy songwriting.
While the whole EP is solid, the stand-out track is “Fine”, which shouted out “banger” the moment I heard it. Frontman Tyler Kemmerling’s grunge influences are clear from the moment the crunchy guitars and face-smacking drums come in (following a surprisingly sweet, serene intro). But listening to the lyrics, Kemmerling shows off a clever, tongue-in-cheek bite (“Yeah you think you’re damn fancy, got your tampons from Dior”). And on the chorus, he goes all-out for a big, hopeful sing-along that doesn’t lose its heaviness.
