Puerto Mariel is the musical project of Alex Castro, who back in the mid-eighties, dreamed of forming a Spanish rock band with Latin overtones. After playing in local garage bands, life got in the way and side-tracked Castro’s musical dreams.
But it’s never too late, and as his debut single “Maldito Antro” shows, Castro has what it takes to rep his home country as one of the next great Latin rock exports. The track begins with a great groove, thanks to funky guitar lines, exuberant horns, and a rhythm right off of an 80’s club hit. Castro’s vocals aren’t showy; they let the music speak. But during the bridge, they take an emotional song the heightens the power of the song.
