New Music Friday: February 23, 2024

I hope you all enjoyed a shorter week thanks to the Presidents Day holiday. It certainly got us to the weekend sooner, and with it, a fresh batch of new albums and songs to consume.

So what goodies have I decided to feature for you today? First is the new album from the excellent songwriter Hurray for the Riff Raff – a true force in the indie scene. Speaking of indie scene, MGMT have finally officially joined it for their new album, though their music has always been associated with indie rock. We then have some other fine indie releases from groups Eighty Six Seas, Safari Room and Night Windows. And finally, we’re adding in the funky new album from Indonesian band Lair. Perhaps if enough of you listen to these and enjoy, they could graduate to majors for their next albums!

Being on a major certainly helped Kings of Leon to new heights years ago, and they’re still kicking with a new single out this week. Folk rock troubadours The Old 97s are back with jam, and The Struts continue to strut their stuff with a new single. Frank Turner has dropped the third song from his next album, while Bayside have released the second single from their new record. There’s also another previously unreleased song from Linkin Park gracing us today.

Norah Jones has an intricate new indie folk tune for us, and Catfish and the Bottlemen are back with their first new song in five years! Machine Gun Kelly shows his sensitive side on a new piano ballad, and Katie Pruitt continues to show off her lyrical genius on her new one. Bleachers have shared the last single before their new album comes out, and Grouplove have surprised with a new song. I’ve chosen some fine tracks from other artists we’ve featured here before like New Junk City, Gary Clark Jr., Stand Still, Trashed Ambulance, Paul Weller, The Jesus and Mary Chain, I Don’t Know How But They Found Me, Kate Clover, Iglu & Hartly, Matt Costa, OnceWereSixty, Letters Sent Home, Imogen Clark, Felicity, Gramercy Arms, Cinders, Autogramm, Between You & Me, Tripliciti, Cosmo Sheldrake, Ellis, Winnetka Bowling League, Adrianne Lenker, Khruangbin, S.J. Armstrong, Close Talker and The Wonder Years!

And I always like to find sweet new tracks from artists we haven’t featured here before, so this week you get to discover Love Ghost, Liz Arcane, Space Alligators, Seán JoyceBlunt Chunks, Jennifer Tefft & the Strange, The North Country, Young Jesus, Bullion, Lair, Ken Pomeroy, Devon Welsh, Beans, How???, Rainbow Skull Party, The Magic City, Ordinary Elephant, Limina, Judd Warrick, Faulty Cognitions, F.O.D., The Skinny Limbs and Sonny Tennet.
