World Watch: Duo Landry+

Country: Benin

Composed of Landry Padonou and Landry Dannon Magnidet, Duo Landry+ fuse acoustic and contemporary sounds inspired by their Beninese roots. Their lyrics, written and sung in Fon (their mother tongue) and French, tell stories that delve into various social themes such as love, hope, courage, the empowerment of women, education, and personal life experiences. And there’s a pure beauty to their songs that anyone can appreciate, even if you don’t understand the language.

On their sophomore album Mobilisons-Nous, the duo move with bright, summery gems like “Ce Nawa”, which shows off their lovely acoustic playing, warm harmonies, and knack for arrangements that act like a balm for the soul. “Garde Espoir” is a mellow Afropop number, with soulful vocal delivery, while “Je Reve” flows with a modern R&B rhythm, but adds in woodwinds for interesting textures.

Throughout the album, the musicianship is top-notch, with crystal clear production. This is the kind of album to throw on for a relaxing beach day or while reading on a summer afternoon. Wherever you listen to it, you’ll soak up the songs’ positive vibes.
