EP Review: Reddy Hollow – Paper Days EP

Few things bring me more pleasure the sense of having just discovered something wonderful that the rest of the world hasn’t caught on to yet. That was my feeling when I first listened to the song “Paper Days” by New York-based indie rock duo Reddy Hollow. Formed in 2020 by Matt Geffers and Noah Parshall, Reddy Hollow look young, but the way they write songs sounds steeped in the tradition of great rock n’ roll and soul music.

The title track from Paper Days is simply a stunner – crooned, R&B-style vocals with arrangements out of the 60s, full of rollicking rhythms, punchy guitars and a bit of boogie piano for texture. The line “Now that it’s stuck in my head, I can’t forget, it’s driving me crazy” may hold true for listeners, as the track is so good it may just drive you nuts.

But that single is not a one-off. The other three songs here showcase the band’s songwriting prowess. Opener “Tides” brings light, surfy licks and Beach Boys-style harmonies to the throwback track, while “Leather Seats” conjures more modern eras, with Strokes-like hooks and flavorful organ. And the closer, “Stupid Reasons”, brings out the duo’s soulful influences, with it’s sparse, desert-gospel opening, gradually evolving into a grooving love ballad.

A debut like this only makes me hungry to hear what the group does next. Jump on the Reddy Hollow bandwagon now and you won’t regret it. Listen to the EP here.
