The Marias is a psychedelic indie rock group with a mesmerizing female lead-vocalist: Maria Zardoya. Their sound has a mystical quality that help to blur the lines between jazz, rock, funk, and dream pop. Their first album CINEMA, dances between English and Spanish, with the occasional French moment. The varied musical features of crescendo, whisper, and andante really help the listener to step into the feeling they are giving. And with playful lyrics like “Cherry tattoo be looking tasty,” there is an undertone of sexy sweetness that runs through their sound… “hush”.
The lead’s voice has the quality of one of those really pretty female vocalists you might find on a classic Kaskade track. If you are familiar with “Be Still”, the singer Sunsun is a close match. So if you have a nostalgia for early 2010’s electronica, you might find her voice very soothing to your ears.
Lead vocalist Maria Zardoya posted an instagram story discussing the origins of the first song to be released from their sophomore album Submarine.
“I was conflict avoidant at the time, and whenever someone wanted to talk about something serious, I’d run and hide… I wrote this song in one of my moods when I just didn’t wanna talk and wanted everyone around me to just leave me alone… We started recording this in a studio in Madrid in 2020… but it took us two years to get it just right.”
The song evokes a lot of qualities that we have come to love about the Marias first album, with an updated baseline of funk. Their album aesthetic has shifted from bright red with white swans, to an underwater ghostly blue. Her skin is like porcelain, the lighting harsh and cold, and her hair buoyant.
For those of us who are already in love with this band, the release of their album on May 31st, can’t come soon enough. Until then, you can listen to “Run Your Mouth” in our Check This 2024 Playlist!
