Formed in the summer of 1990 by lead singer Billy Campion (aka Vic Thrill) and the brothers Billy and Brendan Ryan, The Bogmen toured the entire east coast, building a following until they were too big to ignore, eventually getting signed by Clive Davis. Mixing of rock, soul and afrobeat-infused anthemic power pop, the band released their debut album in 1994, and proceeded to see their star rise.
High profile tours filled the band’s lives, but after releasing their second full length album in 1998, they disbanded. Over the next twenty+ years, the group would sporadically reform, playing one-off shows and releasing EPs, but it is only now, in 2024, that they are gearing to release another full-length album. On this coming album, In My Kingdom, is the psychedelic garage rock jam “Where the Goddess Goes”, and we’re premiering the track here!
“Over and over the rainbow, all the way down the moon river” croons Vic Thrill, as shakers and dreamy guitar chords gear up for the fun funky to come. Horns join the R&B rhythms, creating a slinky, boisterous and celebratory six minutes of danceable, wonderful weirdness. The song, as with the rest of the record, was recorded at The Carriage House in Stamford CT by engineer Phil Palazzolo, and produced by Billy Campion & Brendan Ryan.
About the song and video, Billy Ryan has said:
“”Where the Goddess Goes” is a musical piece that my brother Brendan wrote. It has a Brazilian Girls, Fela Kuti influence. It’s got layers; some funky guitar, percussion, horns, electronic drums and an ethereal Tamika Tyan on back up vocals. The wurlitzer piano is reminiscent of Ray Manzarek of the doors. Billy Campion channeled Fela Kuti as a vision or message that he might give with lyrics about an imaginary lake that appears in the night. As an oasis in the desert with animals feasting and some as predators but in a more romantic way.
The video was directed by long time collaborator Chris Cassidy with lighting design and projections by B.A. Miale and wardrobe by Niamh Byne. The stop motion photography of the goddess was done by animator Richard Borge.”
