Seattle’s Wicked Mouth (real name Joshua Goupil) fuses contemporary and nostalgic sounds, creating glossy, accessible and melodic songs that delve into topics such as queerness, coming out, intimacy, self-reflection, spirituality, and mental health. One of the stand-outs from his independently released album Wildfire is “Friend to All”. About the song, Goupil has said:
This track, “Friend to All”, is about rejecting limiting beliefs and how many things you can try. It’s ok to befriend everyone you meet and try everything that interests you.
With lyrics like “I hit you back, but every reply is a heart attack. Turn into a ghost, then it all fades to black,” the song definitely expresses feelings of anxiety. Goupil’s vocals have a smooth, soulfulness on the track, almost like a peppier Iron & Wine. Singing over a rock rhythm and piano chords (with some fancy organ noodling closing out the track in style), “Friend to All” musically touches on sounds from a number of decades, but works beautifully as a contemporary slice of emotive pop rock.
