Country: Spain
Birthed from Madrid’s music scene, Mamita Papaya defy expectations of what a rock band should sound like. The group throws healthy doses of funk, cumbia, disco and pop into their very danceable songs, creating a sound that is wholly their own.
The groove in “El Dresscode” is pure sultry club banger, while the wah wah guitar and funk horns might make you think you’ve traveled back to a 70’s discotechque. Even if you’re not fluent in Spanish, you’ll easily be singing back “dress code dress code” to the band and in your head. The band continues their funky folk with “Aguacate”, which has a big, harmonized chorus over acoustic guitars that could just as easily been Mumford & Sons, if those UK boys spoke Spanish.
There’s some beautiful flamenco guitar playing on “No Llores Como el Agua”, a serene and sunny disco rock number, but Mamita Papaya can also show a darker side, like on the synth-laden “El Traidor”. Though even that track brings in some hand claps and bongos to keep things fun and fresh.
If you want to get a party moving, or just have something to soundtrack a day by the pool, Mamita Papaya have something for you. Listen to a couple of their jams in our World Watch Playlist!
