New Music Friday: June 21, 2024

It’s a punky New Music Friday this week, as most of today’s new albums are filled with that high-energy sound. We’ve got the return of 00’s pop-punkers Mest, with their first new album in many years. There’s the debut solo album from The Mighty Mighty BosstonesJoe Gittleman (read my review of it here). The Used have dropped a collection of unreleased b-sides and rarities, and we have an EP from up-and-coming emo/punks Sunday Morning. The only outlier is the latest album from soul-pop band Lake Street Dive.

There’s a lot of this energy in the new singles featured this week as well. Piano punks Something Corporate have dropped their first new song together in over two decades (it’s billed as a collaboration with frontman Andrew McMahon‘s In the Wilderness project). Less Than Jake haven’t been away as long, but they’ve been around longer and are still releasing great ska-punk jams. Laura Jane Grace isn’t slowing down with her stream of folk-punk songs, nor is British punk Yungblud or indie punks Hot Mulligan – all have new singles out. While not necessarily punk, Beach Bunny bring some of the same hooks and bounce in their music, so it’s nice to have the latest single from them.

There’s also new indie rock from Deer Tick, Americana from Pony Bradshaw, guitar pop from Suki Waterhouse, soul from Mavis Staples, and funk from Bootsy Collins. A long-lost David Byrne/Devo collaboration has finally resurfaced and been released. Oh, and you may have heard of this little band called Coldplay. They’ve got the first single from their new album out today.

Other acts returning this week include The Boathouse, Hunter James & The Titanic, James Haro in Storage, Salem Wolves, Stephen Kellogg, For Closure, Rich Ruth, Queen M, The Dangerous Summer, Bones Owens, Anberlin, Tropidelic, The Aquabats, Oceanator, Michael Marcagi, Rob Baird, Daisy Grenade, Fontaines D.C., Highly Suspect and Ghost!

And of course, we’ve got to feature some new blood. I’ve chosen new tracks from Indigo Daydream, Roisin O’Hagan, Eufrika, Ben Brown, Arms & Hearts, Sharifa, Greasediver, Sub*T, Psychic Lines, Swerve, Wyldlife, Halfway to Neptune, Daisy Veacock, New West, Billy & the Kidz, Brother Elsey, Two Trains Left, Oli Barton, Tinkertown and Melanie MacLaren.
