Banger of the Week: Disabled Housewives – Sister Sister

While they may hail from the Canadian metropolis of Toronto, Disabled Housewives‘ sound is firmly rooted in the Southern California skate punk and pop punk. The group are fairly fresh to the scene, with only a couple songs released, but when the songs are as good as “Sister Sister”, it’s easy to feel confident there’s more goodness from the group on the way.

There’s an edge to the guitar work right from the start of the song, calling to mind the kind of punk rock from the 80’s. Vocalist Kenna attacks with an unaffected croon that develops into a caterwaul. There remains a consistently strong melodic sensibility throughout, and a few great needle-drop moments, such as when the music cuts off and Kenna sings “I was born and put in your arms”, before there’s a furious breakdown with all the parts coming back in at once.
