Bad Ass Break-Outs: Jeremy Abrams – Who Am I?

There’s nothing wrong with embracing the description of writing “sad boi” music. Influenced by emo-leaning artists like Movements, Cory Wells and Silverstein, New Jersey’s Jeremy Abrams‘ dives straight into the beloved soft/loud dynamic of the emo (sad boi) genre in his music. Just take a listen to tracks like “Who Am I?”

The verses have a hushed resonance, with Abrams quietly singing over an intricate guitar line. On the chorus, he breaks out into a big, beaming pop-punk chorus full of angst, and lyrics reflecting the self-criticism that can spawn following a break-up (“Please tell me, what the fuck was so wrong with me that you had go and change-up every piece of me?”).

“Blindside” is an equally emotional anthem, with layers of production that makes it sound massive (and gives Abrams a chance to drop a slick guitar solo). The smashing drums at the end paired with the tongue-twisting lyrics are irresistible. And on “Meant to Be”, Abrams channels his inner Dashboard Confessional, playing an achingly vulnerable acoustic lament.
