You won’t find too many singer-songwriters in Omaha who are skilled at writing boundary-pushing pop-rock as well as being well-versed Cretan lute players, but that is just one of the things that make Stavro stand out among the pack. As the release date for his album You Turning World draws near this fall, I am excited to premiere with all of you his latest single “What Might it Feel Like?”
About the song, Stavro has said:
This rarely happens to me as a writer, but the chorus of this song seemed to just fall out of the sky. I was standing in my parents’ living room when it happened, and the instant I heard it in my head, I went straight for the nearest guitar and whipped out my Voice Memos app before it disappeared. Everything else—the verses, the chords, the call-and-response guitar riff that comes in midway through the song—poured out in response to that simple, yearning tune in the chorus.
Opening on a mid-tempo beat with simple acoustic accompaniment, Stavro sings with a contemplative tenor, delivering poetic lyrics “a dark door step, as it passes, we whisper what it means. What might it feel like?” Upon the second verse, backing vocals come in and the beat picks up, leading into a soaring, melodic chorus, filled with a yearning for answers. A psychedelic guitar solo rips through a cathartic bridge, before returning to Stavro‘s swooning vocals and memorable chorus.
