Banger of the Week: Matty Myatt – Self-Help Wanted Ads

There’s an unapologetic honesty to Canadian rocker Matty Myatt. Even just when discussing the song, Myatt has said:

“This is the first song i wrote coming out of rehab 6 and a half years ago, which might tell you too much about my turn around time.”

Even if it’s taken him a while to release the track (the first single off a forthcoming 3-song EP), it was certainly worth the wait. The celebratory track of redemption starts right off with ramshackle guitars and drums building a rollicking atmosphere. Myatt’s impassioned vocals shout on the chorus “I don’t feel like dying today, I just wanted to escape”, which is likely a statement many who have battled addiction would attest to.

The confessional song continues, with lines like “I can still feel the pills in the back of my throat” imbued with pained memories and the resolute energy of someone pushing forward. The spirited song packs more emotional power than 90% of the songs out there people declare to be “bangers”, so it certainly is worthy of being our Banger of the Week.
