From London to Abu Dhabi to Boston, Ollie Gullick has experienced different parts of the world and gained a unique perspective of the world and himself from these travels. As a young musician at the Berklee College of Music, he began developing his voice as a songwriter, and would eventually form the band The Lads to tour around the city. These early years is when he first wrote “Sushi!”. About the song, Gullick has said:
“I wrote this song when I was 18, and it is about my early teen years when I was discovering myself a gay man. It is about the beauty and excitement of intimate experiences I have had over the past few years, and its suggestive lyrics combined with the huge sound of the instrumental has captivated audiences at my live shows, becoming a fan favourite from the first time I played it.”
The song is brimming with sauce and attitude, with a sizzling electric blues breakdown on the bridge. Gullick’s lyrics are fun and evocative (“Let me melt in your mouth like chocolate strawberries from Godiva”), and chock full of hooks.
