While famous for its 80’s hardcore scene, Washington D.C. still has some punk spirit bubbling up in its music scene. You can see it fully in young trio Soul Meets Body. Hardcore-inspired, with a big emphasis on community and inclusivity, the band’s songwriting takes the energy of hardcore and filters it through wonderfully unpolished bubblegum punk. One of their best bangers is live-favorite “Island of Lost Souls”.
A raucous youthful energy permeates through the track, from the ramshackle garage rock rhythms and guitars, to the innocence in the vocal delivery. The bass gets your toes tapping, and when the rest of the band comes in, it begs you to jump around and lost your mind. Yet lyrically, the song is very mindful, with lyrics like “this world wasn’t designed for us to discover ourselves” and “there’s nothing special about me. I’m just another lost soul” showing the existential crisis at the heart of the track. So an old soul’s mind in a young band’s body? Either way, the track pays off with a cathartic conclusion that will make you want to spin it again.
