“If we’re playing a song that doesn’t have the crowd dancing or toe-tapping, then we’re not doing our job.” Such is the ethos of Calgary’s Memphis and the Grande, a group of musical vets coming together to bring back the sound of authentic outlaw country rock. Led by Memphis Pambrun, the group has been releasing music since 2022, and last year put out the album Songs From the Dirt Road, containing the swaggering “Unholy Mix”.
Definitely a toe-tapper, the song is built for the barroom with it’s gritty electric chords and snappy rhythm. The vocals are mixed to sound like a jukebox singalong, while lyrics like “but when it comes to whiskey and your lips, you and I are an unholy mix” carry that down-and-dirty style of storytelling that makes the outlaw country greats so transcendent.
