Australian artist Rory Newman draws from a number of stylistic influences for his melodic, 60’s and 70’s sounding blend of folk, and singer-songwriter music. With his warm, baritone vocals and poetic lyrical style, he makes tracks like “Make That Train” off his latest EP Mirror Flame resonate with the kind of alluring melodies that have made Hozier a household name.
With it’s shuffling, finger-style guitar melody and light piano accompaniment, “Make That Train” begs you to drift off staring at an endless sky and a far-off horizon. There’s an approachable, friendly timbre to Newman’s delivery that is purely inviting, and as the song’s rhythm picks up and Newman sings “Am I ever gonna make that train?”, you still feel like he’ll be all right. It’s comfort music for the soul.
