Bad Ass Break-Outs: Riley Burns

Around the holidays, a Canadian singer-songwriter came across my virtual desk and I couldn’t think of a better season for it. Reminiscent of the classic, country twang and folk perfected by Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, Guy Clark and the like, the new singles released by Riley Burns have that worn look and feel that begs you to pour a whiskey and lend an ear.

“I’m Alive” is Burns’ latest song, released on December 13th. The thing that drew me in with this song, and all of the other Burns’ songs I ended up listening to, is how unapologetically honest he is. This is a song about just getting through life somehow, despite any troubles that may come your way – which I think we all can relate to. Burns sings, “So take the trip, hitch a ride. It might be quick, might last all night. This time we’ll get it right, I’m alive” against a gentle acoustic and lonesome electric that maintains that old soul tone.

Burns’ vulnerability is further on display with his September 16th single, “My Friend.” A really sweet song dedicated to his most meaningful friendships, Burns sings, “And as I pluck these strings you taught me out to play, I’m a kid, 10 years old, we’ve come a long way.” As he walks through all the memories he has with loved ones, you can’t help but smile along with him.

It’s not always sweet and hopeful with a Riley Burns song, however. One of my favorite tracks in his growing discography is “Drinkin’” from his 2020 EP Stirling Ave. This is a quintessential country / singer-songwriter song; it’s got drinking, heartache, and some clever wordplay. Against a lovely, “Blackbird”-inspired riff, Burns sings, “I’ve been drinkin’ and I’ve been thinking’ but, mostly drinkin’ alone.”

Whether it’s a heartbreak tune or a love letter to a friend, Riley Burns is consistent with his commitment to an honest song. Check him out in our Bad Ass Break-Outs Playlist!
