There’s an explosive energy to Canadian rock band Burly Wood‘s single “Savings Account”. It hooks you from the start. The band attacks the track with the spastic energy of groups like Cursive, with a wild and tongue-in-cheek lyrical outlook that seems to have been lost since the 90’s.
The track opens with this chugging start and sinewy melody that has a midwest emo feel, but that is soon tossed away with a raucous gang chorus and shredding vocals. And before the two minute mark, the song takes a left turn, going into a bluesy, psychedelic breakdown with the frontman singing “I’ve got a drinking problem. It’s not your problem” in a delivery that sounds positively drunk (in a good way).
WIth the peppy “naaaa naaa naaa” ending chants, you feel like you’ve gone on a musical journey in just under three minutes. If you’re like me, you’ll want to listen to the song again right away to absorb all the other elements the band throws in that you might have missed.
Happy to have this be the latest addition to our Bangers of the Week Playlist!
