North London songwriter Henry Nielsen released his debut EP last year, showcasing both his knack for personal songwriting, as well as unique storytelling. The latter is on display in the EP’s first single, “Teddy”.
In his own words, “Teddy” is “about being replaced by your nephew. It is tender and bittersweet with a country tinged, laid-back alt-rock sound.” Nielsen’s soothing vocals certainly have a bit of a country lilt, but there’s also a wise, gravitas in the delivery that harkens back to classic folk rock. The simple arrangement is perfectly without frills, letting Nielsen’s lyrics stand out starkly (“Teddy I’m half the man that you’ll ever be”).
