Scottish singer-songwriter Campbell McNeil began his musical career as part of the band Swearbox, before launching sis solo career last year. Writing songs based on his personal experiences, including the tragic ones. It’s one of these experiences that inspired his second solo release, “Strength”.
McNeil was recording the song with one of his best friends, who also worked on his first single release. Before the recording could be finished, his friend took their own life. Through the heartache and pain of this event, McNeil decided to persevere and finish the song in memory of his friend, starting it again from scratch.
The result is a powerful, heartfelt rock track with an 80’s sheen to it. McNeil gives a passionate vocal performance, with lyrics that capture the confusion and pain of losing someone in a way that blindsides you (“I watch the flame as it flickers, and then it’s gone.”). It’s a great song, and worth listening to.
