New Music Friday: May 16, 2025

Though not as heavy as the last couple of weeks, this week’s NMF still has more new albums and songs deserving to be heard than the average week.

Friend of the site Dan Mangan has shared his latest collection of introspective folk rock, while the wild and unpredictable tune-yards will keep you on your toes with their jams. Legend Chuck D has dropped a solo album for any fans of old school rap, and Jonah Matranga’s OneLineDrawing continues to prove himself to be one of the best underground emo artists around. And if you want some SoCal garage rock, the new Strawberry Fuzz album will hit the spot.

I’m personally excited for the return of Wargirl, who shared their first new single in many years today. Bruce Springsteen has shared another song from his upcoming Tracks II collection, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizards will get any party raging with their new one. There’s more Britpop from The K’s, and genre-spanning genius from De’Wayne. Aussie G Flip has drop a soaring pop rock banger, while Mattstagraham continues to prove he’s a modern pop-punk master.

90’s alternative hero Evan Dando is back with a new Lemonheads single, and modern singer-songwriter extraordinaire Brian Dunne dropped a new tongue-in-cheek pop rock bop. A post-humus Avicii track has dropped featuring Elle King, while Linkin Park have shared the final new single from the deluxe edition of their new album. Also returning to the list this week are MxPx, Sun Room, Buckcherry, Murder by Death, Jools, Sydney Sprague, Spark of Life, Mariel Buckley, Levi Evans, late night drive home, The Stray Pursuit, World’s First Cinema, Mike Huguenor, Derek Smith and the Cosmic Vultures, Leo Lauren, Slow Joy, Ekkstacy, The Young Hearts, Theo Bleak, Career Woman, FRND CRCL, Wyldlife, Empired, Pinstock, Trevor Hall, Petey USA, Jade Bird and The Black Keys.

And the newbies on the list this week are a great bunch; Jonah Kagen, Fritz Kahn and the Miracles, Constellation Myths, Fellow Mortals, Captain Kaiser, Seedbed, The Coolies, Tebi Rex, Michael Younker, Doc Burner, The Last Revel, Spin, Year0001, Ali J. Hassan, The Chelsea Curve, Raynes, Kyle Raye, SunYears, Pat Hatt, Chris Ballew and Qualia and the Five Ancestors of the Great Maryland Kingdom.

Trust me – these tunes are worth your time. Just start streaming our New Music Friday Playlist to hear them all.
