Soft spoken singer-songwriter and indie rocker Catherine Campbell has a knack for drawing her listeners in with her dreamy, orchestrated songs, such as the ones on her latest EP Outline. The Chattanooga, TN based artist shows off her light, airy vocals on wistful original songs like “Too Late”, but also turns in a beautiful take on The Beach Boys‘ classic, “In My Room”.
The original Brian Wilson-penned song was a moodier number that addressed the anxieties and mental illness Wilson suffered from. On her version of it, Campbell lifts the blanket of moodiness, and gives the song a dreamy, acoustic make-over. Her lilting vocals and lightly picked acoustic guitar make the song feel both delicate and empowering. The entire arrangement is lovely and loses none of the emotional punch of the original.
