The Technicolors are back with their fourth album Heavy Pulp on August 29th! At first listen of the album I knew I wanted to cover this one; it has a diverse vibe and there are no skips!! Hitting us with the perfect end of summer album to take us into the fall.
The Technicolors are an American rock band originally formed in Phoenix, AZ (also my hometown). They started releasing music back in 2012 and have been going nonstop since. The band took a moment to regroup after their last album in 2021 but it was not a hiatus – they have been working hard behind the scenes the last four years. In their dormancy they watched their listeners grow and their Spotify has hit over 100 million streams. Now felt like the perfect time to step back into the scene with a very intentional, massive, brooding rock album.
Track 1. “Gold Fang” 2. “Softcore” 4. “Alpha Alpha Alpha” 5. “Posh Spice” & 6. “First Class to Nowhere” were released as singles so I feel like it’s only fair to start with those. Starting the album off with “Gold Fang” was an excellent choice. It immediately captures you with the instrumentation and the distorted yet clean vocals. “Softcore” is one of the softer tracks on the album but do not sleep on it because it’s a fantastic song. I love the vocal processing on this one, and I would love to drive down by the beach and listen to it. “Alpha Alpha Alpha” hits us with driving guitar and sick lyrics “how long til your girlfriends leaves / wasted in the cemetery trees”. “Posh Spice”, obsessed with the guitar licks. Track 6 – “First Class to Nowhere”, we’ve got a duet happening!! The vocals are so entrancing and I could listen to this song for hours.

The rest of the album is just as good as the singles! I think my personal favorite of the album is track 7, “Ta ta ta” – it is so fun and danceable with silly lyrics and the instrumental just scratches that part of my brain so perfectly. Also, the last song on the album “I Miss My Friends” is so real and relatable, such a raw song that everyone can relate to! Overall, such an incredible album and a must-listen to in my opinion.
Although the band was formed in Phoenix, AZ, they are now spread out across Los Angeles and Nashville. Heavy Pulp was produced by Grammy-nominated Robert Adam Stevenson (Queens of the Stone Age, The Kills) and features BRONCHO’s Nathan Price on drums. The Techicolors’ singer, Brennan Smiley is currently on the road playing guitar in BRONCHO and Sean Silverman (guitar & backing vocals) is also a part of indie band Beach Weather.
If you want to see The Technicolors live, they’re playing:
- August 29th at Zebulon in Los Angeles, CA
- August 30th at Valley Bar in Phoenix, AZ
- September 5th at Sultan Room in Brooklyn, NY
