Handsome Midnight are no spring chickens. They’re a group of scene veterans who have been playing together since 2011, and already have a handful of albums to their names. With each album, they’ve added a few more ingredients to their recipe, making them adept at everything under the melodic rock spectrum.
On one of their fine new singles, “Piece”, the group has mined the power pop vaults. Echoing groups like Big Star, The Posies and Teenage Fanclub, “Piece” revels in joyful group choruses, with lilting vocals that edge on melancholy. There’s a little psychedelia in the lyrics (“Gonna write another letter to the sun, let her know it’s time to right where we went wrong”) that make the song even more intriguing.
