Artist: Cole Greenwalt
Song: “Alcoholic”
Album: Alcoholic EP
Genre: Alt Country, Americana
While country music is often sold as “working class” music, far too often it’s written and performed by artists who haven’t lived “working class” for most of their lives. Not Cole Greenwalt. The Kentucky-born, Nashville-based artist’s family roots go back to coal country and hard-living, and these stories come through in his music.
That doesn’t mean his songs are depressive dirges. His latest single turns his unhealthy coping mechanisms (ie: drinking) into a punchy country-rock singalong that easily gets stuck in your head. He’s brazen with his honesty (“I’m an alcoholic, nothing else to call it”), even as the melody would make this song as welcome in a bar as in an AA meeting.
