The Silverlake Conservatory of Music has long been an organization beloved by California musicians, especially the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Flea has often spoken about the importance of the Conservatory’s mission to make music education accessible, and nurture the next generation of Los Angeles music talent.
Last week, the Conservatory’s All-Star ensemble paid the love back to Flea and his famous band with a tribute EP (with all funds benefiting the Conservatory). While the SCM All-Stars’ take on some of the Chili Peppers funkier numbers are plenty of fun, their take on the Peppers’ soulful Coneheads single is a true stand-out.
There is something wholly endearing in the youthfulness of the lead vocals, and hearing the full ensemble sing the chorus as a choir will leave you wishing the Chili Peppers had gotten a gospel choir on the original version.
