Scottish quartet Mixed Signals began as a simple one-off project for frontman Ben Gardiner needed a backing band for a charity gig. That show in 2024 led the band to make the project a real thing, starting their journey as Mixed Signals. Drawing inspiration from artists like Inhaler, Biffy Clyro, Radiohead and Muse, the band write atmospheric, emotionally grounded alternative rock. Latest single “Different Frequencies” is an excellent showcase.
Loud, angular guitars may prepare you for something heavy, but the song uses these more as punctuation between moody, confessional lyrics. There’s a yearning and pain in Gardiner’s vocals as the track builds on the chorus, leading to the previously mentioned riffs and a one-two punch drum beat that will make you want to head bang, stomp and pump a fist in the air all at the same time.
