The days of the journeyman folk hero perhaps aren’t as dead as one might think, reading about Charlie Diamond. The fire-fighter by day/musician by night writes in his bio he has wrestled an alligator, driven a tank and fought a tornado while playing every type of venue (and non venue) around. In between all of this, he finds time to write some mighty fine songs.
His latest is “Montana On My Mind”. While the title may call to mind James Taylor, the rootsy folk rock stylings of the song are far more indebted to artists like Bob Dylan and Lucinda Williams. A mid-tempo folk rocker loaded with lovely slide guitar and a rollicking rhythm, the lyrics pine for a free-spirited woman who the song’s protagonist just can’t shake from his memory. There’s something very classic about the song, hearkening back to a more ‘freewheeling’ era of music, and the track is all the better for it.
