Artist: Murs
Song: 1,000 Suns
Genre: Rap, hip-hop
A former member of hip-hop group The Living Legends, Murs (real name Nick Carter) is a Guinness Book of World Records-setting rapper based out of California. If that was clear, he named his most recent record Captain California. The album shows off Murs’ excellent storytelling capabilities, with tracks following two rapper friends dissing each other over a woman they are fighting over (the hilarious “Lemon Juice“) and one kid’s struggle to survive in the streets (the effective “GBKW“).
My favorite track on the album is “1,000 Suns”, and unapologetic ode to Murs‘ wife. Over a quirky synth beat, Murs recalls his initial meeting and courting of his soon to be “only one”, their survival through financial struggles, to the happy present-day family life, replete with kids named after X-Men. It’s a nerdy and unabashedly romantic song, which is rare to find in hip-hop, and makes Captain California all the more refreshing.
