Country: France, Spain
Manu Chao is the perfect artist to highlight for a World Watch, as he is truly an artist of the world. Born in France but of Spanish origin, his music spans a range of various styles and numerous different languages. I first became aware of him in college, after the release of his anti-war song “Rainin’ in Paradize”, but he will always hold a special spot in my life as it was while salsa dancing to one of his songs that I kissed my future wife for the first time.
Chao first began recording music in the late 1980’s, being heavily influenced by punk groups like The Clash, but as he went solo in the 90’s, he traveled around South America to absorb the music of the streets and expand his stylistic palette. On his newest track “La Vecina del Patio” with Chalart58, the heavy influence reggae music has had on him over the years is on clear display.
