Throwback Thursday: The Verve Pipe – The Freshmen

How long has it been since you thought of these guys? Originally forming in 1993 and building up a following in their home state of Michigan, The Verve Pipe didn’t truly hit it big until their major label debut Villains, which contained the singles “Cup of Tea”, “Photograph”, and the top 5 hit “The Freshmen”. Subject matter-wise, it’s a strange pop single, as it follows the narrator’s guilt over his lover’s suicide, but the passionate singing and fully orchestrated music do make it difficult to not get swept up into the track’s lyrical drama.

Though their follow-up album failed to keep them in the mainstream, The Verve Pipe have never gone away. They’ve released four rock albums (including an album released in February of this year, Parachute) and two kids/family albums all since the release of Villains. And if you give them a listen, you’ll find some good tracks on them.
