One of the biggest ongoing jokes in the music industry is the short, SHORT period in the late 90’s when 4th wave ska and ska-punk bands were all the rage, conquering radio and MTV with a brass-infused tidal wave. And the group that garnered the most success from this blip were Boston’s Mighty Mighty Bosstones, a ska-punk force that brought muscle and melody to the new wave.
For many years, The Bosstones were my favorite group, with Let’s Face It, and their follow-up Pay Attention, on heavy rotation on my CD player. I was a fan of all the ska bands of that time. I saw Less Than Jake four times live, Real Big Fish three times, and sought out any rock band with horns that could get me jumping. And I know I’m not alone in my love for these groups – it’s just that most people won’t admit it.
As this is the last Throwback I’ll be posting before the holidays, I thought it would be appropriate to share this little Ska-liday song from Boston’s favorite ska band. Get in the spirit, 1998-style.
Did I mention all of these groups are still around and making music? Look them up on Spotify and check out what they’ve been up to the last few years.
