From their Wiki page: Zeal & Ardor is an avant-garde metal musical project started and led by Manuel Gagneux, a Swiss-American musician who had previously created a chamber pop project called Birdmask. Gagneux started this new project after taking suggestions from a 4chan thread that suggested he combine the genres of Black Metal and old slave songs and spirituals.
The results are songs like the title track “Devil is Fine”, which begins as a typical spiritual with handclaps and harmonies, but builds a darker momentum as the guitars come in with a furious drum beat. It’s a bit haunting, a bit empowering, and all-around fresh sounding.
