As long as Australia keeps sending us solid rock bands, we’ll keep taking them. Formed in 2012 in Sydney, Gang of Youths quickly became one of the country’s most heralded new rock groups, getting nominated for a number of ARIA awards for their debut album The Positions, and winning more for their most recent album Go Farther in Lightness.
Single “The Heart is a Muscle” is a rousing number, powered by lively drums, spirited horns, light violin and piano touches, and the melodic, strong vocals of David Le’aupepe. When he sings “The heart is a muscle, I want to make it strong”, it becomes an uplifting call to arms, instead of a drab platitude. This is a band to keep an eye on, as it’s clear they are making a bid to take the states.
