Indie rock/soul/R&B trio Populuxe have been playing together for a decade, yet still finding new and innovative ways of combining their various influences (Curtis Mayfield, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin) to take their songs into unexplored musical territories. Beneath their musical ingenuity also are lyrics reflecting the times we live in, with their upcoming album, Beauty in the Broken Place, taking direct inspiration from the horrific shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue.
Lead single “Where Did I Go Wrong” holds some melancholy in the lyrics, but the music will take you to a completely different place. Slinky vocals and a shuffling beat merge into an R&B groove, with some funky bass reveling in the atmosphere, that then boldly elevates into a sunny, acoustic hymn, complete with warm, Beach Boys-esque harmonies. You can also catch a little jazzy guitar solo in at the end. It sounds like nothing else out there right now in the best possible way.
