Live Report: The Darkness at The Wiltern (October 6th 2023)

The Wiltern was set ablaze last Friday night as the iconic British rock band, The Darkness, took center stage in a performance that will undoubtedly linger in the memories of the lucky attendees. From the moment the lights dimmed and the opening chords reverberated through the storied venue, it was evident that this was not just a concert; it was a sonic journey straight into the heart of pure rock bliss.

Justin Hawkins, the flamboyant front-man of The Darkness, commanded the stage with a magnetic presence, donning his signature catsuit and exuding an infectious energy that spread like wildfire among the audience. The band kicked off the night with a relentless barrage of hits from the entirety of their classic album, Permission to Land, instantly transporting the rapt audience back to the glory days of glam rock (and 2003).

Hits like “Love is Only a Feeling” and “Givin’ Up” had the crowd singing along at the top of their lungs, bolstering an already electric atmosphere that encapsulated the essence of a true rock concert. Beyond the classics, there were also a few other surprises including a jaunty Radiohead cover of “Street Spirit” and B-Side “Curse of the Tollund Man”.

The Darkness exhibited exceptional musicianship, with each member contributing to a tight and powerful sound that resonated through the venue. Guitar solos from Dan Hawkins were nothing short of spectacular, adding an extra layer of intensity to an already explosive performance.

The supremely magnetic Hawkins, long known for his witty banter and crowd interaction, didn’t disappoint. His charismatic rapport with the audience added a personal touch to the show, making it feel like an intimate gathering despite the large venue. At one point, he ventured into the crowd, connecting with fans on a more personal level during the raucous encore finale, “Love on the Rocks With No Ice”; at another point, he stopped the show dead in its tracks to bring two lucky members of the audience onto the stage to film the setlist closer (and their most famous song) “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.”

The Darkness’ performance at The Wiltern on October 6, 2023, was more than a concert; it was a celebration of rock ‘n’ roll in its purest form. The band’s performance was a testament to their enduring talent and the timeless appeal of their music. For those fortunate enough to be in attendance, it was a night of sonic ecstasy, a reminder that the spirit of rock is very much alive and thriving.

Flash back to their epic debut album here.
